Members taking part are randomly allocated into teams. One member of each team is given a picture. The task for that person is to make an 10 inch square (including binding) mini quilt, inspired by or interpreting the picture (but not copying it).

Once completed, the quilt is shown, and a photo of it given, to the second person in the team. No one else should see it!

That person then makes their 10 inch square quilt inspired by the quilt they were shown. Again once completed, they take a photo and give it to the next in their team…..and so on.

Each person has 6 weeks (or less if they’re really industrious) to make their quilt.

The quilts for this project can’t be shown till all the teams have completed their offerings. The November 17th meeting will be the time for the great reveal!

I wondered what would be produced, so searched online to get an idea. Beckenham Quilters have done a whispers challenge twice. Their starting picture for 2021 was “Christmas Eve” by Patrick Heron.

Montague Patchers, from Sale, came to visit us in March and brought along their efforts for a Quilty Whisper. They had 13 people in a group, each having up to a month to do a picture quilt, which had to be under 2 foot square. Their starting picture was –

One group produced these picture quilts

The other these –

It was very interesting to see how each quilt inspired the next one.

Looking forward to see our group’s mini quilts in November…..
