On Tuesday 24th September the Beartown Patchwork and Quilters drew the winners for their Charity Quilt Raffle. The quilts, all lovingly crafted by the group, had been proudly displayed at their Ruby anniversary exhibition in the Town Hall, in May. The sponsors were Congleton Borough Council and Congleton Inclosure Trust.
There were many prizes. All were designed, sewn and put together by the group. The first prize was a beautiful Ruby Bouquet Quilt. Other prizes included a red and white quilt and a snuggle quilt. See the prizes here. The winners were from Congleton and as far afield as Birmingham and Manchester. A total of £2000 was raised and donated to a local charity “Ruby’s fund” This was set up to help children and their families, in the local area, with special educational needs and disabilities. Two representatives from the charity- Sue and Karen – came along to receive the cheque from our chair person on behalf of Ruby’s Fund.

They explained how the fund was started by Ruby’s mother when her daughter Ruby was born, as she found there were no local facilities for children with special needs. The charity now has a full quota of fully trained staff . They also have a sensory room that can be used by up to eight children. The charity does lots of fund raising. They are currently organising line dancing, an early doors disco and a pudding party.
The meeting concluded with tea and cake and a “Show and Tell” where members exhibited items they had sewn over the summer break. Janet Whitewright was excited to say that the group has now clocked up over a 100 Quilts for care leavers.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 8th October is a workshop led by Chris Flatman – making an appliqué owl panel.
