UFO – an unfinished object that sits in the pile of other UFOs!
On September 29th 2026 Helen and Donna ran a workshop about this very subject.
Over each year Beartown runs workshops and evening makes and for various reasons, the patchwork started in theses sessions does not always get completed. As an example Helen asked people to bring in blocks started during various Lizzie Wall workshops –
These are examples of works in progress…..
and these have been finished and bound ….
All unique works of art:)
During the evening the group discussed why it is a good idea to clear ‘work in progress’ and to share work with other people to get their ideas on how to finish things off.
Helen shared how various Lizzie Wall blocks had been used –
Reasons given for completing the UFO being a good idea were:-
- to free up actual space and head space,
- to release fabric back into stash and give a sense of achievement.
it was agreed that sharing ideas is very useful as a UFO could then be made into something rather than having a half finished project, or possibly, it could be finished off by someone else if the maker had had enough of it!
Keeping a record of projects was also suggested.
Anne Carter shared a quilt top she was making from UFOs plus additions

Then she also suggested that people should keep unfinished projects with their relevant parts and materials.
She’d been inspired by a red and white quilt she’d bought and started her own off. Then a few years later she came across the remaining material and thought, right I’ll complete it. She then unearthed the original and discovered she’d just done the blocks going the opposite way!

Members resolved to try and encourage and help each other in future meetings to get projects completed.
So watch this space!
